Setting: While Les Miserables takes place during an important time (1815-1833) for France politically, the rebellions do not directly affect Cosette and she only experiences them in glances or through Marius. Her life for the most part is very sheltered and isolated, due to her adoptive father Jean Valjean being extremely protective of her. Cosette is likely very unaware of the going ons in France, or at least compared to other characters. From the point she is taken, she is also unaware that her father is an escaped convict, and barely knows the struggles he has faced. For Cosette, things are more general, rather than specifics about kings and such. So, I’ll try not to linger on the politics and focus more on what does affect Cosette. Simply put, things were bad in France and the government unstable. Many were impoverished and sick, forcing people to become criminals or to rebel against those in charge. This was the world Cosette grew up in, but for a majority of her life she was kept away from it all.

At the age of two, Cosette was placed into the care of an innkeeper, Thenardier, because her mother could not care for and also find work. Her mother, Fantine, having been left by her father, was frowned upon for being unmarried and having a child, and as such was forced to lie and say she did not have a child when working. Her money from work was put towards Cosette, both her current living expenses and an amount she hoped would eventually allow them to live together. However, all money sent to the innkeeper was used instead for him and his family, while Cosette was abused and forced to do much of the work around the inn.

Desperate for more money, Thenardier sent letters to Fantine saying that Cosette was sick and needed medicine or needed to see a doctor, and various other ruses. The discovery of one of these letters at Fantine’s workplace caused her to be fired, and believing her child to be dying she resorted to desperate measures to earn money. She sold her hair, her teeth, and became a prostitute. Eventually, Fantine was arrested, and then saved from charges by a man she knew as Monsieur Madeleine, the mayor of the town and the owner of the factory she worked in. As she had grown ill, he brought her to a hospital, also promising to fetch and care for her daughter. Fantine died before he could do so, though, and the mayor was then revealed as the escaped convict, Jean Valjean.

Hoping to fulfill his promise, Valjean fled to Montfermeil, to the inn where Cosette was staying. He found Cosette as she was doing chores and helped her with them, bringing her back to inn and settling all of Fantine’s debt for her. He essentially adopted Cosette after that point, and the two lived happily ever after. Or as happy as they could with their circumstances.

Due to his background, they were forced to relocate many times, moving from different cities and apartments. At one point life was calm for them, when they lived in a convent where Valjean worked as a gardener and Cosette attended school. They stayed there until Cosette was nearly an adult, and by this point the love her father had given her had nearly erased the unhappy childhood she had had. She hardly remembered her life before him, but remembered the Thenardiers as monsters as well as praying for a mother she didn’t know.

As an adult, Cosette was still kept away from the rest of the world. Valjean feared that his identity would be discovered once more and Cosette would be harmed as well if this were to happen. Still, she was very close to her father, despite his behavior. At times she would copy him in his actions, and her beliefs were very similar to his own. Cosette joined him in giving to the poor and like him was caring and philanthropic. She was aware of the suffering in France in this way, but still not to extent anyone else would have been. Her life was blissful and he gave her the best of what he could.

Then a boy happened.

For many days, Cosette would sit with her father at the Luxembourg Gardens. Another man came there around the same time she did and the two observed each other from a far like that for quite some time. Neither got the courage to speak to the other, to even approach, and it nearly seemed their fairy tale love story would not happen. Even worse, due to the boy's interest in Cosette he had tracked her house down and questioned the man who answered the door. Hearing about this, Valjean grew suspicious and worried the police had discovered him. He and Cosette moved at once and ended their trips to the garden.

But fate would not allow these lovebirds to part! With the help of a friend, the man found Cosette again at her new home and the two finally properly introduced themselves. This almost stalker was called Marius Pontmercy and he and Cosette fell deeply in love in the course of multiple secret meetings. However, bad things always happen in stories, and once again out of worry Valjean and Cosette moved back to one of their old apartments and planned to leave for England as soon as possible. Cosette left a letter for Marius to find, telling him of what had happened and her current address.

Aaand that's where our story leaves off, with Cosette waiting to be reunited with her love and holding onto a dim hope that they can remain together.

Personality: What defines Cosette is her optimism. She is above all things hopeful, and in the novel serves as a symbol for hope itself. As a child, Cosette was beaten often and was shown no love or compassion. She was deprived of nearly everything a person ought to have, barely having what she needed in order to live. Those around her were considerably wicked and made her suffer. She was alone, even the children who had once played with her scorned her now instead. Her caretakers treated her as hardly more than a slave. However, Cosette held onto any happiness she could have, any slimmer of hope she could cling to. Her strength is in her hope and that is what keeps her alive until she is taken in by Valjean. Even then, she keeps this part of herself despite how different the circumstances are. While before she feared being hit and hid her emotions as such, she instead hopes to keep those around her happy by constantly seeming happy. She realizes how much it would upset her father if he were to see her upset, and so she keeps herself happy. Rather than ignoring her feelings or bottling them up, she simply focuses on her positive feelings and pours all her time into what makes her happy. Cosette only wishes to make those around her happy, and as that makes her happy, her sadness or loneliness don't matter as much.

Still, she does feel sadness and loneliness, as one would when isolated for most of their life. She is alone quite a lot, even with the company of her father and their servant. The only time she was with girls around her own age was when she was in the convent, and not much is known about her life then. If she did have friends there, by leaving the convent she left them and likely never saw them again, effectively breaking off those ties forever. The only person she has ever known truly is her father, meaning she has had no friends or important relationships besides him. This changes when she meets Marius, and she quickly falls in love with him. Her love for him is strong and true, even if it does seem kind of silly with the love at first sight thing. When she is separated from Marius she is extremely distraught, but for her father's sake makes herself as happy as soon as she is able to. Rather than thinking of her behavior as a fake smile or something like that, it's more like she tries to look for what is happy and good in her life and make that a thousand times more important than what causes her sadness. It is notable though that Cosette is unlike Marius in how she deals with her feelings for him, as he tends to fling himself into a deep depression without her and she instead would garden and think of other things. This shows a sense of maturity in her in that she does not let any feeling even love consume her entirely to the point that it would become her life.

Raised by a philanthropist, Cosette is compassionate. This may be perhaps because of the life she once lived and how he helped to bring her out of it and into happiness. If she does remember this even slightly, she may hope to do as he had and make others happy. This would tie in with her desire to make everyone around her happy, after all. She goes with her father to give bread to the poor and helps him in other tasks like this. She is loyal and obedient to him, and as such as she also adapts and agrees with all of his beliefs and morals. She takes joy in helping others as he does, and if given the chance she would like to do more to help. Valjean tries to make sure she does not exert herself or harm herself in any way, even if this harm is only eating a bad type of bread as he had done knowing others barely even had that. Because of this, she is only able to do small things to help others, but even that makes her happy.

On Tu Vishan, Cosette will face many changes from her old life. She will be completely separated from her father for the first time in around ten years and will have to learn how to function on her own. This loneliness will be apparent to her at first and likely the worst thing about living on the turtle. At the same time, though, Cosette will be independent and free from his restraints and rules. This will be exciting for her, along with the prospect of meeting new people and exploring her new surroundings. For the first time in her life, she will have the chance to make friends, and for her this will likely be the positive point she focuses on and centers her life around while here. She is afraid and worried, but in her eyes that is natural and not worth mentioning to anyone else. If this land is between dreaming, she takes that to mean she'll wake up eventually. And even if she doesn't, even if she is never able to return to France or see Valjean again, she realizes this life is still somehow blessed and she should be thankful that she is even alive, with food and shelter. Upon realizing Marius is here, her views will change extraordinarily. She is dimmed without him, a light that shines but obviously not as bright as it should. But with him, she will be beyond happy. This time also, there would be nothing to force them apart and they could be together out in the open and always. Perhaps, she'd even consider marrying him here if it is possible.

Appearance: Amanda Seyfried of the 2012 movie.

Abilities: Cosette is perfectly ordinary. She can read and write, due to Valjean teaching her. While she does bring a certain light to a room with her demeanor, her abilities are that of any human’s.

Inventory: Her clothing, as shown in appearance. No items in her possession have any special qualities or abilities.

Suite: Earth Sector, and if she could live in EA-1C that’d be absolutely lovely! Valjean and Cosette were upper middle class and this would be the most familiar for her. She always had plenty when she needed it and was always comfortable, but not outright spoiled.

In-Character Samples:
Third Person:  Cosette paced in her room, having just posted a video to the network. She waited now for replies, but that was the least of her worries. While she had tried to seem hopeful to others and highlight the positives in her current situation, she was indeed concerned with her environment, as any person should be. There were odd creatures here and inventions like she had never seen. This world was meant to be one between life and death, or a state of a dreaming, they had said. But she was not dead. She couldn't be. She had no memory of a death, nor any idea how she could have died. That only left the possibility of dreaming, then. Yet if that were true, she could wake up. Dreams shouldn't last this long or seem so vivid and real.  But it couldn't be real, it couldn't be! While this all was exciting and a new experience for her, this was not the type of world she'd have liked to visit especially with seemingly no way home. Yes, she wanted to meet others and explore the world around her, but she'd have been satisfied for now with seeing some more of France!

And on top of that, she was alone. Although she was used to it, she dreaded solitude, and here she was more alone than she have ever been. She had no Father, no Toussaint, no Marius to comfort her. Marius, oh god, how would he find her now? This was much further than a different apartment, and even further than England. There was no chance of them meeting in such a strange place, but... she hoped. Cosette hoped somehow she could be wrong and that her hopes could instead be right. If Marius was here, her nerves would calm at once. To see him again, to be with him once more, that was all she wanted out of this new world she found herself in. If that simple prayer could be answered, she could live on in happiness here.
Network: [ A girl in a large bonnet peeks at the screen curiously. ] … Is this working? Ah, I think it is! Or at least I hope so; I hope I’m not speaking to no one… [ She pauses, her eyebrows furrowing. That would be really embarrassing, wouldn’t it? Quickly, she smiles and clasps her hands together, attempting to regain her composure and make a nice introduction for herself. ] Never mind that, I’ll assume from this point on that you are able to hear me.

It is a pleasure to be in your company. I am called Cosette. I’ve never had a chance to befriend so many people and the people here seem exciting certainly. I hope we are able to get along at the very least.

[ Cosette laughs slightly, wondering what her father would think of all this. With that thought, she stops herself and puts on a much more serious face than before. ]

If possible, I would like to know if any of you have spoken to or heard of a Monsieur Fauchelevent. It is very important that I find him, you see. [ Another pause and she remembers someone else she'd like to find. If her father could be here, then so could he. ] And I am also looking for Marius Pontmercy. The same applies to him as well. Still, thank you for your time. [ She gives a small smile and stops the video there. ]
